Diary, correspondence, legal papers, documents, memorabilia and one bound volume. The diary covers his years in the army and he writes about many of the people in his company and what is happening to and with them, day to day camp life, skirmishes around Nashville, Tennessee and the Atlanta Campaign including action at Chickamauga and Savannah. There is official correspondence from this time but the bulk is from 1870-1880's and covers his efforts to obtain a disability pension for himself. He also corresponds with several people who had been in his company for whom he wrote affidavits to help obtain a pension. There are three letters from Stephen F. Fleharty, Sergeant Major of the 102nd and fifteen from Edwin Hurd Conger, the Captain and later an Iowa Congressman and Minister to Brazil, China and Mexico. The documents are mostly copies of quartermaster reports. Deeds. Invitations and cards. The bound volume is an exercise ledger from Bryant's Business College.

Edwin Conger purchased a farm in Madison County, Iowa in 1868. In 1874 he moved to Dexter, Iowa (Dallas County) to begin a career in banking. He served in several elected offices including Dallas County treasurer and Iowa state treasurer. President Harrison appointed him to the post of Minister to Brazil. President McKinley reappointed him to this position and then transferred him to the U.S. delegation to China in 1898. Conger achieved prominence during the Chinese Box rebellion of 1900. ...

Knox County, Ill. farmer who served as a 1st Lieutenant and acting Adjutant Company I, 102nd Illinois Infantry in the Civil War, attended Bryant & Stratton Business College in Chicago, farmed in Galva and Oneida, Ill. and served as a director of the Knox County Fire Insurance Company and the Galva town clerk for twelve years.
